Matthew and The Atlas
Matthew is Matthew Hegarty and The Atlas is his wonderful band: Lindsay West on piano and vocals, Harrison Cargill on banjo, Dave Millar on accordion and assorted other bits and Tom Field on drums.
Matthew was playing and recording alone as Matthew and the Atlas when, at the end of 2009, Communion Records called and said they wanted to put out an EP. It was the coldest of winters and so he rounded up some friends and they hid from the snow in a candlelit studio in North London. When they came out it was still snowing, but they had a record - they called it "To the North".
Meanwhile Lindsay and Dave (Matthew's long-time friends and sometime musical allies), Tom (who he'd played in a band with years ago) and Harrison (who he found in a bar - the best place to look for banjo players) decided to try and play these songs together live. Turns out that once they started it was pretty hard to stop - so they haven't.
