Soul Rebels Interview

Nov 14th 2011
The Soul Rebels Brass Band came down and played a very special gig for us. Before their performance we got five minutes to have chat with them and find out how London was treating them.

Station Sessions: Hey Guys, welcome back to London, we’re very excited to have you play for a Station Sessions exclusive today. How does it feel to be back in the capital?

Soul Rebels: It feels real good to be back in London, we are having a great time.

SS: You’re often described as a ‘party band’, bringing a smile to people from continents worldwide. Is this what your aim is when performing?

SR: Yes we aim to be a party band. So when you leave our show you’re feeling good, so you either want to go have some fun or make love! (Laugh)

SS: St Pancras station is a pretty unusual venue to play in; do you have any expectations for the gig?

SR: Our expectations are like any other show, we prepare ourselves musically, mentally and we’re ready to give the audience the best performance we can possibly give.

SS: Never have we come across a band that gigs as much as you! With around 250 gigs a year you must have played in some incredible venues. What’s the most random gig you’ve ever played?

SR: Most random gig I must say would be in the train station. Right now!

SS: What’s the first thing you do when you get home from being on the road for such long stints?

SR: Obviously see loved ones, see the family and eat home cooking. We’re just happy to back home and see the family. But always ready to get back to the fans and do what makes them happy.

SS: You’re known as having a killer atmosphere for live shows. Were you worried about sustaining this atmosphere when transferring your music to disk?

SR: That’s always been a hard thing for a lot of acts. You do a live show and you have a lot of energy and there is a lot of stuff going on. The hardest thing is to bring that energy to the CD and this CD we have put out is the probably the best interpretation of what we do in the show. It’s as close as we can get it to the show.
But it’s always best to be live at the show, we are live show band, that you want to see live.

SS: ‘Unlock Your Mind’ has some great arrangements of classic songs such as ‘Sweet Dreams’, how do you go about choosing the covers for the band?

SR: It really just happened. We didn’t really plan it. We play our weekly gig in New Orleans and our tuba player started playing it one day and we went for it.

SS: How do you come up with your original songs for Soul Rebels? Is the compositional process collaborative or does one of you in particular write for the band?

SR: The way we come up with songs is collaborative. Most them have a meaning. We see a need to make some type of a statement and we put it to music. It is for enjoyment, not so much political stuff, but world peace and happiness.

SS: Your favorite thing about London?

SR: I love how diverse London is. The fashion and the style, I love it! We just love London, people are so open. We try to bring different and cutting edge music. We are happy to play it in London as people here are ready to hear cutting edge music.

SS: Great talking to you all, enjoy your time in the capital and we look forward to catching you at the London Jazz Festival.

SR: Thank you! Peace
